It's the Year of the Dragon! Grrrroooowwwll!

2012 is the Year of the Dragon

Just read the above article about the upcoming year.  Looks like the Dragon brings with it some great changes, a revolutionary spirit.  Should be interesting.  I like being informed, so I took a look at some of the history behind the Dragon in Chinese astrology and learned that...

More than 4,000 years ago, there were two large tribes and many smaller tribes in China. The tribes had animals as emblems. The two large tribes unified and chose the dragon as their symbol. In fact, the Han Chinese still call themselves the descendants of the Dragon. In Chinese astrology the dragon was seen as a powerful almighty king because it was made up of different parts of animals such as a tiger, fish, snake and an eagle.
The Chinese dragon was not seen as a threatening evil being as we do in the west - rather a symbol of power, superiority and rule.Still today, the Dragon is a revered symbol. You can see many sculptures and carvings of the dragon. Even today, the Chinese associate the dragon with power and wisdom.

2011 was the Year of the Rabbit.Water Rabbit I'm a Rabbit, a Water Rabbit, to be precise.  What does that mean?  That I'm a calm and peaceful creature, particularly well-dressed, who enjoys the finer things in life, like good cuisine and wine.  How does the Water Rabbit spend her time?  Picking out fabulous things to wear, vacationing and reading poetry.  Picture her sliding down the side of a rainbow into a pond of crystal-clear water, with a family of unicorns nearby... 'tis the life of the Water Rabbit.

2011 was a pretty lucky year for me.  But in roars the Dragon, with a snarling energy, taking no prisoners. So I remind myself that I'm also an Aquarius, the sign of eccentricity, independence and revolutionary thought and action.

Hmmm... maybe this Dragon will turn out to be my pal after all?

Curious about how the two years work with each other, I found this excellent article from the Fresno Bee that compares and contrasts the two years, and gives you an indication of what 2012 might be like.

Hold onto your hats, ye wee bunnies and goats, ye tiny pigs and roosters.  The year of the Dragon is Nigh.

DIRTY DRAGON art by JIM  Hopefully he'll be more like the wacky one pictured here - B.J. and Dirty Dragon, the stars of the children's show I watched back in the 70s.  Maybe Dirty wouldn't mind sharing a five-course tasting menu with this Water Rabbit. Now, that would be awesome!
